Entry Requirements

South Coast SCITT seeks candidates who are resourceful, reflective and resilient people. We look for candidates who are well –organised and who can relate well to others.

All candidates must be physically and mentally fit to teach young children (DfES Fitness to Teach, 2007) and not legally debarred from so doing.  Please note, a criminal record does not automatically debar a candidate from a place on the Course. 

Applicants for training in either Early Years or General Primary must demonstrate the following essential criteria in order to be invited to the selection process:

Academic Requirements

(N.B In cases where applicants have not yet received qualification outcomes at the interview stage, any training offers made are conditional on proven successful achievement of such qualifications.)

An honours degree  An honours degree 2.1 +

GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, maths and science at grade C or above.

(For GCSEs awarded from 2017 onwards this equates to a grade 4 or above under the revised numerical grading system.)

GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, maths and science at grades A or B.

(For GCSEs awarded from 2017 onwards this equates to a grade 6 or above under the revised numerical grading system.)

An academic profile demonstrating achievement across a range of disciplines. Evidence of academic achievement at Masters Level

Experience

A minimum of one week's school experience from the previous 2 years.

Extended school experience, for example as a teaching assistant or similar role working with learners from a range of primary age groups.

Reference

Two informed and positive references. At least one positive professional reference from a head teacher or senior school leader.

Personal Statement

A personal statement that demonstrates:
  • an appropriate standard of written English
  • appropriate commitment to the teaching profession and reasons for seeking work in the Primary sector
  • recent experience of working with children in schools or other appropriate settings (i.e within the last 2 years)
  • appropriate personal / professional strenghts, values and attitudes commensurate with the teaching profession

A personal statement that demonstrates:-

  • extended experience across the 5-11 age range
  • an excellent standard of written English
  • highly positive and professional values and attitudes
  • excellent subject knowledge in the core subjects
